Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the three fold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of days must be considered serious.

Items you will need to bring are needle, thread, (white, gray, or light yellow) and pair of scissors. The most important thing to bring is patience. Be adventuresome and be willing to try something new. You will be surprised by what you can do. Join other parishioners; a good time is had by all.

The Archdiocese of Chicago is committed to providing safe environments for the community. In the midst of a culture of violence, the Church is a staunch voice to call us to be a place of peace. The Archdiocese has long had a best practice restricting the presence of firearms in our facilities. Most of our buildings display signage, consistent with the laws of the State of Illinois, indicating that these weapons are prohibited on the premises. Cardinal Cupich recently distributed a Policy aimed at updating and clarifying the Archdiocese’s position on the prohibition of firearms on all property it owns and controls. The Archdiocese respects the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and recognizes the right to lawfully possess a firearm for personal protection, hunting, or other sports. The Archdiocese has sought to balance the rights of all who visit our properties with the need to protect children, the elderly and other vulnerable populations. However, this Policy is rooted in the belief that our churches and community spaces are intended to be sacred sites where people come to gather, pray, and worship God. There are exceptions to this policy for law enforcement officers, and authorized security personnel. For more information about this Policy, please visit www.archchicago.org

comefollowmeDuring the past few weeks, many parish families received a letter from Cardinal Cupich requesting your participation by making a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Others have been asked to participate in making a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal at Mass these past three weeks. We ask that you respond as generously as possible. Appeal supports both Parish and archdiocesan ministries and services. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries in our Parishes. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Come, Follow Me.” We have all received God’s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God’s love to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Cardinal Cupich of the in pew brochures, please note the ministers and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note, when our parish reaches its goal of $14,536.00 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish.

For more information or a pledge envelope, call the parish office: (708) 484-7951.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Tony Markus
